Journey Java Coffee Brew Guide
Every great journey deserves great coffee. Use this guide as a reliable starting point, then adjust to match your taste, equipment, and roast.
The Golden Starting Point
- Coffee-to-water ratio: Start at 1:16—one gram of coffee for every 16 grams of water.
- Water: Fresh, filtered water brings out the clearest flavor.
- Temperature: Aim for 195–205°F (90–96°C), or let boiling water rest for about 30 seconds.
- Grind immediately before brewing whenever possible.
No scale? A practical starting point is about two level tablespoons of ground coffee per 10 fluid ounces of water.
Choose Your Brewing Method
Automatic Drip
Grind: Medium
Ratio: 1:16
Brew time: About 4–6 minutes
Level the grounds in the filter basket and let the brewer complete its full cycle. If the cup tastes weak, use slightly more coffee rather than packing the basket.
Pour-Over
Grind: Medium-fine
Ratio: 1:16
Brew time: About 2½–4 minutes
Wet the filter first. Add just enough water to saturate the grounds, wait 30–45 seconds for the bloom, then continue pouring slowly and evenly.
French Press
Grind: Coarse
Ratio: 1:15
Steep time: About 4 minutes
Stir gently after adding water, steep, then press slowly. Pour the coffee out promptly so it does not continue extracting in the press.
AeroPress
Grind: Medium-fine
Starting dose: 15–18 grams of coffee to 240–250 grams of water
Brew time: About 1–2 minutes
Stir briefly, steep, and press with steady, gentle pressure. AeroPress recipes are wonderfully flexible, so use this as a launch point.
Reusable K-Cup
Grind: Medium
Cup size: Begin with 6–8 ounces for a stronger cup or 10 ounces for a lighter cup
Fill to the reusable filter’s recommended line without tamping or packing the grounds. Journey Java sample portions can produce more than one cup in many reusable-filter setups, depending on the strength and cup size selected.
Espresso
Grind: Fine
Ratio: About 1:2—18 grams in and 36 grams out is a common starting point
Extraction: About 25–30 seconds
Distribute the grounds evenly and tamp level. A Journey Java sample portion is intended as a useful starting dose for a single espresso preparation; exact basket capacity varies by machine.
Cold Brew
Grind: Coarse
Concentrate ratio: 1:8
Steep time: 12–16 hours
Steep in the refrigerator or at cool room temperature, strain thoroughly, then dilute the concentrate with water or milk to taste. For a ready-to-drink brew, start closer to 1:15.
Dial In the Flavor
- Sour, sharp, or thin: Grind finer, brew a little longer, or use slightly hotter water.
- Bitter, harsh, or dry: Grind coarser, shorten the brew, or use slightly cooler water.
- Too weak: Use more coffee or less water.
- Too strong: Use more water or reduce the coffee dose.
Change only one variable at a time. Small adjustments make it much easier to discover the cup you love.
Keep It Fresh
Store coffee sealed, dry, and away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Avoid the refrigerator, where condensation and surrounding odors can affect the beans. Grind only what you plan to brew.
Sip On. Adventure On!
